About Us

Domestic Violence Project, Inc. (DVPI) was founded in 1978 by three courageous Canton women—Nancy Boylan, Helen Syrios, and Gertrude Kennedy—who recognized the urgent need to support victims of domestic violence. What began as a grassroots effort fueled by volunteers and donations has grown into a vital organization serving Stark County and surrounding communities. Grounded in compassion, safety, hope, and healing, DVPI empowers individuals during their most vulnerable moments.

DVPI is a private, non-profit agency dedicated to serving survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, stalking, and dating violence and their children through trauma-informed, confidential, comprehensive services, delivered with respect and cultural sensitivity. Programming includes 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, housing assistance, peer support, advocacy for survivors of human trafficking, as well as legal and medical support.
