WHAT IT TAKES TO KEEP THIS THING GOING
Here’s how our 3-legged stool of financial support is looking as we near our Champions of Hope Annual fundraiser.
1. Government: VOCA (Violence Of Crime Act) funds first authorized by congress in 1984 are non-taxpayer monies generated by the fines payed by federal criminals. This leg of the stool has been our most reliable source of support, but have shrunk by over 40% in recent years.
2. Grants: Here is where we have turned to make up for the VOCA shortfall. In recent months we’ve generated more grant-based support than ever in our history and we are truly grateful. However, this money is often a one-time thing. Here’s a quick look at the organizations that have stepped forward this year and helped us meet a growing challenge. We thank them all.
Sisters of Charity: We were recently awarded $298,000 over the next two years as a sustainability grant. This money will be used to hire needed staff, increased health insurance and other functions critical to our continued existence.
City of Canton: $100,000 to help us cover some needed upgrades to our building, office equipment and other physical needs.
Rotary International
God Bless the Rotarians. They are an exceptional community support group dedicated to good works. Two local chapters have provided some much needed support.
Massillon Chapter: $20,000
Plain Tap. Chapter: $ 7,000
3. Donations: Without community support our little group would never exist. Donations of necessities and monetary donations have always helped us keep the wolves from our doors. Some donors give us $25, some give us thousands. All are cherished in our heart because they help us make a difference in the lives of so many people escaping the ravages of domestic violence. Like everyone else, we do through tough times, but donors sustain us.
